Natural dog food: artisanal French spirulina, additive-free, for sports dogs, seniors and sensitive dogs

What you demand for yourself, your dog deserves too

At Akal, spirulina for animals isn't a spin-off product line created to expand the catalogue.
This is the same conviction that has guided our farm since 2009: artisanal spirulina, dried below 42°C, without additives or preservatives, makes a difference – whoever consumes it.

The majority of spirulina for dogs available on the market is industrially dried at over 100°C. This rapid process destroys precisely what makes spirulina valuable: phycocyanin – this blue pigment with natural anti-inflammatory properties – the essential fatty acids responsible for a glossy coat, and a portion of the B vitamins essential for energy and the nervous system.

Spirulina for Akal Dogs is dried below 42°C. This keeps its living components intact. The same principle, the same rigour as for our human range – applied to your dog's pouch.

What she does — and what she doesn't do

What she's doing

– Supports coat, skin and vitality over the duration of a regular course

– Strengthen natural defences and facilitate recovery after exertion

– Provide complete proteins, iron and vitamins in a natural food without additives

What she doesn't do

– Replace veterinary follow-up in case of diagnosed illness

– Acts within a few days – effects take hold over 3 to 6 weeks depending on the goal

– Compensating alone for an overall unbalanced diet

The 5 benefits — and for which dog

1. Shiny coat and healthy skin

Essential fatty acids, zinc and B vitamins deeply nourish the skin and contribute to a glossier, denser and less dull coat. What owners notice first is that the fur regains its shine and shedding becomes tidier. Results are generally visible after 3 to 4 weeks of regular treatment.

Ideal profile: Dogs with long coats or dull fur, dogs that shed excessively out of season, dogs with mild skin itching.

2. Daily vitality and energy

The richness in complete proteins and iron supports the animal's overall energy. What this changes concretely: a more active, livelier dog, less apathetic on a daily basis. Particularly noticeable in older dogs whose digestive absorption capacity decreases over time, or in indoor dogs whose standard diet does not cover all their needs.

Ideal profile: Senior dogs, dogs with low energy, dogs transitioning their diet, or recovering after illness.

3. Muscle recovery and athletic performance

Spirulina's complete proteins provide all the amino acids necessary for muscle repair after exertion. Iron improves oxygen supply to the muscles. Phycocyanin, preserved by drying below 42°C, helps to reduce residual muscle tension. The dog recovers better between outings, with fewer signs of fatigue the next day.

Ideal profile: Sporting dogs (canicross, agility, tracking), active herding dogs, working dogs with busy schedules.

4. Enhanced immunity

Phycocyanin and beta-carotene support the animal's natural defences and mucous membrane health. A seasonal course – in autumn, in spring – helps the dog's body get through seasonal changes with greater resistance. As continuous maintenance at a reduced dose, it supports defences all year round.

Ideal profile: Dogs often catch colds or are tired during seasonal changes, dogs in regular contact with other animals (kennels, breeding), puppies whose immune systems are still developing.

5. Digestive support

Spirulina’s natural enzymes help to balance the gut flora and aid digestion. Particularly useful for dogs with sensitive digestive systems, those who react to dietary changes, or during transitional periods to a new diet.

Ideal profile: Dogs with irregular stools, dogs sensitive to changes in kibble, dogs on a raw diet seeking natural digestive support.

How to administer spirulina to your dog?

Sprinkle the daily dose directly onto the kibble or mix it into wet food. The powder naturally adheres to the moisture in the food – most dogs accept it without difficulty thanks to the natural umami taste of spirulina.

Start at half the recommended dose for the first week, to gradually get the digestive system used to it. Then increase to the target dose.

A precaution: never mix spirulina with a very hot meal – the heat destroys what drying below 42°C has preserved.

Dosages According to Your Dog's Weight

Dog's weightInterview / dayCure / DayBag duration 200g (maintenance)
Small (< 10kg) — chihuahua, yorkshire1 gram2gAround 200 days
Medium (10 to 25kg) — beagle, cocker1.5g3G~133 days
Large (25 to 45kg) — Labrador, Border Collie2g4gAround 100 days
Very large (+ 45kg) — German Shepherd, Mastiff2.5g5GAbout 80 days

1 level teaspoon ≈ 2g of powder.

For sporting and working dogs: double the dose during training or competition periods. For puppies from 3 months old: start with a quarter of a teaspoon and gradually increase over two weeks. If your dog is undergoing veterinary treatment, ask your vet for advice before starting.

Treatment protocol — what happens week by week

Week 1

Introductory half-dose. The digestive system adapts. The slight green colouring of the stools at the start of the course is normal and harmless – it's a sign that the spirulina is being well ingested and is passing through the system.

Weeks 2 and 3

The full dose has been reached. The first signs are appearing: the dog seems slightly more toned, and its coat is starting to gain a shine.

Week 4 and beyond

The effects are taking hold. The coat is glossier, denser. For sporting dogs, recovery between sessions is significantly improved. Natural defences have been strengthened throughout the course of the treatment.

One month of a complete course is the minimum for the effects to be truly established. The 200g sachet at 2g/day for an average dog covers exactly this cycle – with plenty to spare.

Precautions for use

– If veterinary treatment is ongoing, particularly anticoagulants, consult your vet before starting.
– Not recommended for dogs suffering from haemochromatosis
– For dogs with autoimmune diseases: seek your vet's advice
- Green stool at the start of the treatment is normal and temporary
– Keep the sachet tightly closed, away from light and moisture

Ingredients: Spirulina (Arthrospira platensis) 100%

✅ Dried below 42°C — phycocyanin, essential fatty acids and vitamins preserved

✅ Produced in France — same process as the Akal human range

✅ No additives · No preservatives · No GMOs · No pesticides

✅ Same quality standards as the human range — no compromise

Is Akal spirulina for dogs the same as that for humans?

Yes - same spirulina, same drying below 42°C, same standard. The difference lies solely in the packaging and dosage, adapted to the canine metabolism.

From what age can you give spirulina to a dog?

From 3 months for puppies, at a reduced dose of a quarter of a teaspoon per day, gradually increased. For adults, the standard dosage depends on weight (see section »how to use it?»).

Will my dog accept spirulina in his kibble?

Most dogs accept it without difficulty. The natural umami taste of spirulina generally goes down very well in moistened kibble or wet food. For fussy dogs, start with a pinch and gradually increase over a week.

Is green stool normal?

Yes, absolutely. It's a sign that the spirulina is being properly ingested and is passing through the digestive system normally. It usually disappears after a few weeks when your body has adapted.

How long does it take for the effects on the coat to be visible?

The first effects on the coat are generally observed after 3 to 4 weeks of regular treatment at the full dose. For vitality, signs can appear from the first two weeks.

Is spirulina suitable for dogs with sensitive or older joints?

Yes. The natural anti-inflammatory properties of phycocyanin, combined with essential fatty acids, make it an interesting support for older dogs with sensitive joints. Consult your veterinarian for a protocol tailored to your pet's situation.
