FAQ
Organic Akal Spirulina: Benefits and Quality

The Spirulina is a cyanobacterium, sometimes called a freshwater micro-algae, recognized worldwide as the most complete superfood. At AKAL, our premium spirulina is a natural nutritional bomb: it is extremely rich in plant-based protein, and Orphan highly digestible, with vitamins (particularly group B) and antioxidants. It is ideal for addressing nutritional deficiencies, combating anaemia, and supporting a vegetarian or athletic diet.
We are pioneers in organic spirulina cultivation in France.
Our farm has been in existence since 2009. At AKAL, spirulina is produced artisanally, respecting both people and nature.
We have carried out a lot of Research & Development, which has allowed us to achieve exceptional expertise. This is also why we have trained and helped about a dozen French farms to get started.
Our spirulina is lovingly cultivated in our ponds in Normandy. Unlike the majority of industrial spirulinas dried at high temperatures, which have a strong smell and a bad taste, AKAL organic spirulina is an artisanal spirulina of the highest quality.
We use gentle, low-temperature drying (<42°C).
The result: a premium «raw» spirulina with a mild, crisp flavour, which retains 100% of its nutrients and precious phycocyanin.
We won the 1st International Algae Prize in California in 2011.
The difference lies mainly in the shape:
- Spirulina twigs This is the purest and least processed form. It is crunchy and has a very mild flavour, perfect for sprinkling on your salads, dishes, yogurts or toast.
- Spirulina powder: The twigs are ground on a millstone. This results in a very smooth-textured spirulina powder for daily consumption, ideal for mixing into juices or smoothies.
Spirulina tablets These are simply cold-pressed twigs, with no binders or additives. They are a convenient format for those who prefer a quick intake with a glass of water or juice.
Bio-Phycocyanin: The Blue Gold of Spirulina

The Phycocyanin is the natural blue pigment extracted from fresh spirulina.
It is its most powerful active ingredient, often called «Blue Gold».
It's a powerful antioxidant and a stem cell stimulator.
It acts effectively against inflammation, boosts the immune system, and promotes rapid muscle recovery. Our liquid extract offers higher bioavailability than classic spirulina for almost immediate effects.
Its liquid, undehydrated form is ideal as it retains all its benefits for optimal vitality and recovery.
A course of treatment is recommended during seasonal changes, during periods of heavy tiredness, intense stress, or during sports preparations (marathon, trail running, weightlifting). It helps with blood oxygenation and lactate removal.
Total phycocyanin 60 mg of which C-phycocyanin (active) 50 mg.

Usage Tips and Dosages

The secret is the Vitamin C.
The plant-based iron in spirulina is much better absorbed when consumed with a source of vitamin C (orange juice, kiwi, lemon, or our Potion Tonic).
Avoid consuming it simultaneously with tea or coffee, which inhibit iron absorption (keep a 2-hour gap between taking spirulina and tea/coffee).
If you don't have a specific need for iron, it's possible to consume spirulina and tea/coffee at the same time.
The Spirulina is the ideal ally during periods when your body is put to the test. We particularly recommend starting a Spirulina cure In the following situations:
- At the change of seasons: Ideally in autumn and spring to strengthen the Immune system and prevent winter ailments or seasonal allergies.
- During periods of temporary fatigue: To find tonus and vitality thanks to its richness in iron and vitamins.
During intense physical activity: To support muscle recovery and oxygenation.
For an adult, we recommend a progressive dose: start with 1 teaspoon (or 2-3 grams) per day, then increase to 3 to 5 grammes (a level tablespoon) for optimal effectiveness on vitality and immunity. Athletes can increase to 10g during the recovery phase.
Spirulina is a natural foodstuff and not a medicine, so it is generally very well tolerated.
However, due to its purifying action, some temporary side effects may appear if the course is started too abruptly.
One sometimes observes:
- Mild digestive disorders (bloating, rapid transit).
- Mild headaches (a sign that the detox process has begun).
These effects generally disappear within 24 to 48 hours by simply reducing the dose before increasing it again later.
Spirulina is a safe food.
However, due to its richness in iron and its detoxifying effect, it is not recommended for people suffering from hemochromatosis (excess iron).
It is also not recommended for people taking anti-vitamin K (a form of anticoagulant). If you can consume cabbage (very rich in vitamin K), then you can consume spirulina.
Finally, it is not recommended to take spirulina during chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatment.
In case of doubt or heavy medical treatment, consult your doctor.
Note on quality: Spirulina absorbs heavy metals from its environment.
This is why choosing our organic artisanal spirulina, cultivated in pure, controlled water, is the best guarantee for your health, unlike imported industrial spirulinas.
Absolutely. Unlike certain food supplements that require breaks, spirulina is primarily a cyanobacteria edible (microalgae). Thus, it can be incorporated into your daily diet as a food in its own right.
There are two schools of thought depending on your needs:
- During a course of treatment (1 to 3 months) For a targeted «booster» effect (exams, sporting competition, pregnancy, convalescence).
- For daily consumption (all year round): C'est souvent le choix des... Vegetarian, ...vegans, elite athletes, or people looking to address long-term dietary deficiencies. In this case, a maintenance dose of 2 to 3 grams per day is sufficient to benefit from its Antioxidants as if it were Phycocyanin). To make the most of its plant-based protein, a dose of 5 to 10 grams per day is ideal.
Sat Pavan, founder of Akal, doesn't eat meat and has been consuming 10 to 15 grammes of spirulina per day for over 20 years!
There is no risk of habituation.
Simply listen to your body: if you feel a surge of energy, you can reduce the dose or take a short break.
