Natural spirulina for cats, made in Normandy

What is Akal cat spirulina – and why does the quality of drying make all the difference, even for your pet?

Since 2009, Akal has been cultivating artisanal spirulina in its 1000m² of Norman ponds — dried below 42°C, ECOCERT organic certified since 2014, with no additives or binders.

The majority of spirulina for animals available on the market is produced industrially and spray-dried at over 100°C. This rapid process destroys the phycocyanin, live enzymes, and heat-sensitive vitamins – precisely the components responsible for effects on immunity, coat quality, and vitality. What remains in the sachet looks like spirulina. It's no longer really spirulina.

Akal spirulina for cats is the same artisanal Norman spirulina – the same process, the same standards, the same ponds – packaged in a convenient 60g sachet with a dosage adapted to feline metabolism. It's not a generic spirulina rebranded «for animals». The same source, for the whole family.

What she does — and what she doesn't do

What she's doing

– Support your cat's coat and skin health in depth

– Strengthen the body's natural defences over the duration of a seasonal course

– Provide complete proteins, bioavailable iron, and essential vitamins

What she doesn't do

– Replace with a balanced diet suitable for your cat's needs

– Replacing veterinary follow-up in case of illness

Transform your pet's condition overnight – it's an ally, not a magic wand

The 4 main benefits - and for which cat

1. Shiny coat and healthy skin The essential fatty acids in spirulina – particularly gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), a rare omega-6 naturally found in breast milk – deeply nourish the skin and contribute to a glossier, denser, and less dull coat. Owners generally notice a visible improvement after 3 to 4 weeks of regular supplementation.

Ideal profile: Cats with dull or brittle coats, indoor cats with limited exposure to a varied natural diet, cats during shedding periods.

2. Daily vitality and energy The high content of complete proteins (60–70% crude protein), bioavailable iron and B vitamins supports the animal’s overall energy levels. What this means in practice: a more active, livelier cat that is less lethargic. This is particularly noticeable in older cats or those recovering from illness, whose ability to absorb nutrients decreases over time.

Ideal profile: Senior cats, less active cats, cats recovering from illness or surgery.

3. Strengthening the immune system Phycocyanin and beta-carotene, preserved by drying below 42°C, support the animal's natural defences. A seasonal course – in autumn, in spring – helps your cat's body to get through seasonal changes with more resistance. Research into specific effects in cats is ongoing, but our customers' feedback on the range speaks for itself.

Ideal profile: Cats often weakened during seasonal changes, cats in regular contact with other animals, cats whose defences have been weakened.

4. Complete and natural nutritional value Spirulina provides in a single food what many supplements try to artificially recreate: complete vegetable proteins, iron, calcium, magnesium, zinc, vitamins B12, E, K. Global, natural support, without an incomprehensible list of ingredients.

Ideal profile: Cats fed exclusively on commercial kibble, kittens from 6 months old in the development phase, cats on a raw diet wanting a mineral-vitamin supplement.

How to administer spirulina to your cat?

The basic dosage: sprinkle the daily amount directly onto your cat's food — kibble, wet food, or raw food. The fine powder mixes in easily, without perceptibly altering the taste for most cats.

If your cat is a fussy eater for the first few feeds, start with a pinch and gradually increase over a week.

An important precaution: do not mix spirulina with a very hot meal – the heat degrades the nutrients that drying below 42°C has preserved.

Treatment protocol — what happens week by week

Weeks 1 and 2

The first signals are arriving gradually. The coat is beginning to gain a slight sheen. The animal appears a little more toned day-to-day.

Week 3

The difference becomes visible on the coat. The animal's energy becomes apparent. The effects on the skin start to take hold.

Week 4

The coat is glossier, denser. Natural defences strengthened throughout the course of the treatment.

One month is the time needed for the effects to be truly established – not just glimpsed.
The 60g sachet at 2g/day covers exactly this cycle.

Precautions for use

Spirulina is a natural food that cats tolerate very well in recommended dosages. It contains no gluten, lactose, additives, or preservatives.

Respect the recommended dosages – an excess brings no additional benefit
Introduce spirulina gradually for cats with sensitive digestive systems
If you are undergoing medical treatment, consult your vet before starting a course.
Keep the sachet tightly sealed, away from light and moisture

Which format should I choose?

60g — £9.50 — For your cat The one-month course at 2g/day, or two-month maintenance at 1g/day. The format for starting or for seasonal courses.

And if you also have a dog? Akal offers Spirulina for Dogs — 200g (£25.90), with dosage adapted to the canine metabolism.
Same artisanal quality, same drying below 42°C, same standards from the same Norman ponds.

✅ Dried below 42°C — phycocyanin, enzymes and vitamins preserved

Grown in our 1000m² Norman pools in Saint-Pierre-Azif, Pays d’Auge.

✅Certified Organic by Ecocert — same standards as the Akal human range

✅No additives · No binders · No GMOs · No pesticides

✅ Process identical to the human range — not a re-badged generic spirulina

Is Akal spirulina for cats really the same as for humans?

Yes. It's the same artisanal spirulina, produced in our Normandy ponds using the same drying process below 42°C. The only difference is in the packaging and dosage, adapted to the feline metabolism.

From what age can you give spirulina to a cat?

From 6 months, at a reduced dose of 0.5g per day. Before 6 months, consult your veterinarian. For adult cats, the standard dosage is 1 to 2g per day depending on the objective.

Will my cat accept spirulina in its food?

Most cats accept it without difficulty. Spirulina mixes discreetly into pâté, and its umami flavour is generally well-received. For fussy cats, start with a pinch and gradually increase over a week.

How long before seeing the first effects on the coat?

The first effects are generally visible after 3 to 4 weeks of regular use at 2g/day. For vitality, signs may appear from the first few weeks.

Is phycocyanin really preserved in the Akal cat spirulina?

Yes. Thanks to drying at temperatures below 42°C, our spirulina retains over 20% of phycocyanin — whereas most industrial spirulina for animals, dried at over 100°C, loses a large proportion of it before it even reaches the sachet.

Should I consult a vet before starting?

For a one-off treatment on a healthy cat, no. However, if your cat is under medical treatment, elderly with known conditions, or a kitten under 6 months old, ask your vet for advice on adapting the dosage to their profile.
