Solidarity spirulina tablets, fair trade Burkina Faso: dried below 42°C

Two commitments in one box — Burkina Faso and Calvados, African farm and Norman ESAT

These tablets don't come from one single place. They travel across two continents and two workshops before arriving in your box – and each step carries a human commitment.

It all begins in Burkina Faso. Artisan farms, partners of Akal since 2008, operating under fair trade agreements, cultivate top-quality spirulina under the African sun – dried at under 42°C for 4 to 5 hours.
This drying treatment, shared with Bouquetot farm, ensures that the phycocyanin remains intact, nutrients are preserved, and the intense dark green colour of the African twigs is a testament to a living spirulina.

These partner farms do more than just produce spirulina.
They are fighting child malnutrition in sub-Saharan Africa – by growing a food that the WHO considers one of the most complete of the 21st century, and distributing it to children in local communities.

Next, the dried twigs cross the Atlantic, arriving in Normandy at the ESAT de Colombelles – an Establishment and Service for Aid through Work (ESAT) that supports people with disabilities. It is here, under a handmade millstone, that the African twigs are turned into a fine powder. This powder is then cold-pressed, with no added binders, excipients, or chemical glues.

A unique product in the entire Akal range. The only one that simultaneously upholds two human commitments – international solidarity and social inclusion in France.

What they do — and what they don't

What they are doing

– To bring all the nutrients of artisanal spirulina into the most practical format available

– Support energy, immunity and recovery over the duration of a regular course

To consume spirulina daily without taste, without preparation, anywhere

What they don't do

– Act within a few days – a minimum course of 3 to 4 weeks is necessary for lasting effects

– To substitute for medical follow-up in the case of a diagnosed deficiency

– Recreate the sensory experience of twigs – that's precisely their strength for those who dislike the taste

Why without binder — and why it's rare

The vast majority of spirulina tablets on the market contain a binder – often magnesium stearate or a cellulose derivative – to hold the tablets in shape during industrial compression.

At Akal, we use no binders. Ever. For one simple reason: a tablet containing a binder is no longer 100% spirulina. It is a tablet that dilutes the active ingredient, adds an unnecessary excipient, and indicates that production is geared towards industry rather than quality.

Les Comprimés Solidaire are cold-pressed from pure powder. They are sometimes less visually uniform than industrial tablets. They may disintegrate slightly when handled. This is a sign of their purity—not a fault.

There is just one ingredient in the tablet: spirulina. 100% spirulina. Nothing else.

The 5 benefits — and for whom

Energy and combating underlying fatigue

Spirulina's bioavailable iron supports red blood cell formation and helps reduce chronic fatigue linked to deficiencies. Taken with water and lemon or orange juice, natural vitamin C multiplies iron absorption. A 3 to 4 week course at the maintenance dose is enough to start feeling the first effects.

Ideal profile: people prone to chronic fatigue, women during their periods, people recovering from illness, vegetarians and vegans lacking sources of bioavailable iron.

2. Enhanced immunity

Phycocyanin – preserved by drying below 42°C – and beta-carotene, 15 times more concentrated than in carrots, support natural defences. A one-month course as autumn approaches prepares the body to get through winter with greater resistance.

Ideal profile: People often weakened during seasonal changes, families with young children, people recovering from illness.

3. Complete plant-based protein for athletes and vegetarians

Containing 60–70g of complete plant-based protein — including all essential amino acids — these tablets support muscle recovery after exercise and help meet part of the protein requirements for meat-free diets. When taken in high doses (15–20 tablets per day) with meals, the nutritional benefits are enhanced.

Ideal profile: Vegetarians and vegans looking for complete proteins, athletes training or travelling, people wishing to reduce their animal protein consumption.

4. Natural satiety before meals

Take 30 to 60 minutes before a meal – 5 to 8 tablets with a large glass of water – the protein density of spirulina promotes an early feeling of fullness. A natural way to reduce portion sizes without frustration, without otherwise changing your habits.

Ideal profile: People wishing to naturally reduce their portion sizes, those transitioning or rebalancing their diet, and anyone who snacks out of habit rather than genuine hunger.

5. Complete nutrition on the go

The compressed format is the only one in the range that can be consumed without preparation, without juice, without a spoon, anywhere — on a plane, on a trail, in a changing room, at your desk during a meeting. The 150g box fits into any luggage. Spirulina doesn't stop when you're on the move.

Ideal profile: Frequent travellers, athletes in training or competition, nomadic professionals, people whose daily lives leave no room for preparation.

How to take the tablets?

Each tablet weighs approximately 500mg. Let them melt gently in your mouth — salivary enzymes begin to work at this stage and improve absorption — or chew them directly with a large glass of water.

Avoid tea and coffee simultaneously, as they inhibit iron absorption. Prefer lemon or orange juice to enhance assimilation.

Treatment protocol — what happens week by week

Week 1

Start with 5 tablets per day - one dose in the morning, one dose at lunchtime. The body is getting used to spirulina. Some people feel a slight increase in energy from the first week. Others notice nothing yet. Both are normal.

Weeks 2 and 3

You can go up to 8 tablets if you wish. Underlying fatigue is starting to gradually lessen. For athletes, recovery between sessions is improving.

Week 4

The effects on energy and immunity are established. For those undertaking a full course regularly, the first effects on complexions and hair may become noticeable.

One month's course is the minimum for the effects to really take hold. The 150g box with 8 tablets per day covers exactly this cycle — with a few days to spare.

Precautions for use

– Contraindicated in case of haemochromatosis

– Ongoing medical treatment: ask your doctor for advice before starting

– Avoid consuming at the same time as tea or coffee

- Pregnant women: spirulina is rich in iron and folic acid – ask your doctor's advice for a suitable dosage

Store away from light and moisture, tin tightly closed

What is the difference between Solidary Tablets and French Organic Tablets?

The spirulina from French Organic Tablets comes from partner farms trained by Akal in France.
The Spirulina from Comprimés Solidaire comes from partner farms in Burkina Faso, in fair trade since 2008.
The process is identical — drying below 42°C, grinding on a millstone at the ESAT in Colombelles, compression without binder. The difference lies in the geographical origin and the solidarity aspect of each purchase.

Fair trade, what does that mean in practice for farms in Burkina Faso?

This means that producers are remunerated at a fair and stable price, independent of market fluctuations.
This means the partnership has been ongoing since 2008 – not a one-off transaction, but a relationship.
And this means that these farms are using their spirulina production to combat child malnutrition in their communities – by cultivating a nutritionally exceptional food and making it locally accessible.

Pourquoi les comprimés se désagrègent-ils parfois légèrement ?

Because there are no binding agents. Industrial tablets hold together perfectly thanks to chemical binders that maintain the compression pressure. Without binding agents, the cohesion relies solely on the natural proteins in the cold-pressed spirulina — resulting in a tablet that is slightly less uniform in appearance, but 100% spirulina.
A tablet that crumbles a bit is a pure tablet.

Should they be swallowed whole or chewed?

Both work. Allowing them to dissolve in your mouth is what we recommend – salivary enzymes start to work at this stage. Chew them if you prefer – with a large glass of water. Avoid taking them simultaneously with tea or coffee, which can inhibit iron absorption.

Is the 150g box really practical for travelling?

This is one of the most frequent pieces of feedback from our clients — «Perfect, more practical when travelling». The box is compact, robust and airtight. It can be taken into the cabin as hand luggage without any problems. And the tablets can be taken with any water, without accessories. It is the only format in the Akal range that works everywhere, even without a kitchen or apple juice.

Can I associate the Solidarity Tablets with the Solidarity Twig?

Yes — and it's even the most consistent way to support the Burkina Faso partnership throughout the week. Tablets for travel days or simplicity. Sprigs sprinkled on meals at home. Same origin, same drying, same commitment — two complementary formats.
