Natural feed for equines: artisanal French spirulina, additive-free, for sport and leisure horses

What you demand for your own health, your horse deserves too

At Akal, we have been growing artisanal spirulina since 2009 — with men in mind.
The same drying requirement below 42°C. The same refusal of additives and preservatives. The same conviction that process quality makes all the difference to the actual effects.

We simply applied this same philosophy to horse riding.

The majority of spirulina for horses available on the market is industrially dried at over 100°C. This rapid process destroys precisely the components that make spirulina useful: phycocyanin – that blue pigment with natural anti-inflammatory properties, particularly valuable for joints and tendons – essential fatty acids involved in coat quality, and some of the B vitamins essential for energy and the nervous system.

Akal Horses spirulina is dried below 42°C. It retains all of its living components.

What she does — and what she doesn't do

What she's doing

– Support muscle condition and post-exercise recovery

– Contributes to a glossier coat and more resilient hooves over the course of a treatment

– Strengthen natural defences before winter or periods of stress (competitions, transport)

What she doesn't do

– Replacement of veterinary monitoring in case of diagnosed pathology

– Acts within a few days – effects become apparent over 4 to 6 weeks of regular treatment

– To compensate for an overall unbalanced diet or a lack of basic care

The 7 benefits — and for which horse

1. Muscle condition and sporting performance

Spirulina contains 60–70% complete plant protein — all the essential amino acids needed for muscle repair and development, as well as endurance and strength. What this means in practical terms for a competition horse: better muscle tone throughout the season and more consistent endurance during competitions.

Ideal profile: Show jumping, dressage, endurance, racing, polo horses — for a 2-3 month course before a season or an important event.

2. Post-exercise recovery

The iron in spirulina improves oxygen supply to the muscles during and after exercise. Phycocyanin, preserved by drying below 42°C, helps to reduce residual muscle tension. The horse recovers better between sessions, with fewer signs of fatigue the next day.

Ideal profile: horses undergoing intensive training, competition horses with a busy schedule, horses that struggle to recover between events.

3. Natural joint and tendon support

The natural anti-inflammatory properties of phycocyanin are particularly relevant for equids, who are subjected to significant mechanical stress on a daily basis. As a preventative course during the season, or as support during mild strains. Always as a supplement to veterinary care — never as a replacement.

Ideal profile: Sport horses with a history of tendon issues, older horses with sensitive joints, horses returning to work after an injury.

4. Shiny coat, strong hooves

The essential fatty acids, zinc, biotin, and vitamins A and E in spirulina nourish the skin deeply and contribute to a glossier, denser coat, with faster and more complete shedding. The effects on hooves – harder, less crumbly – are generally observed after 4 to 6 weeks.

Ideal profile: Horses with dull coats or that shed poorly, horses with brittle hooves, horses at the end of winter coming out of a period of underfeeding.

5. Strengthened immunity before winter and periods of stress

Phycocyanin and beta-carotene - 15 times more concentrated than in carrots - support the animal's natural defences and respiratory mucous membrane health. A preventive course of 4 to 6 weeks before winter, before a period of transport or a change of stable helps the body to get through these times with greater resistance.

Ideal profile: Horses often prone to colds in autumn, horses that travel regularly, horses in periods of stable transition or change of ownership.

6. Support during convalescence and anaemia

Its density of iron, complete proteins, and B vitamins makes spirulina a natural nutritional support during recovery periods. For a post-operative horse or one recuperating from illness, it helps the body rebuild itself without adding synthetic products. Double the standard dose during recovery, in agreement with your veterinarian.

Ideal profile: Horses recovering from surgery, anaemic or underfed horses, mares in late pregnancy or lactating.

7. Digestive balance and gut flora

Spirulina's natural enzymes help balance gut flora and aid digestion – particularly useful for horses with sensitive guts, recurring mild colic episodes, or during dietary changes.

Ideal profile: Horses with irregular transit, horses sensitive to forage changes, ponies and donkeys with more reactive digestive systems.

How should you give spirulina to your horse?

Always start with half the recommended dose for the first 5 to 7 days, to gradually get the animal's digestive system used to the new food. Then increase to the target dose.

An important precaution: never mix spirulina with very hot food — heat destroys what has been preserved by drying at temperatures below 42°C. Use only lukewarm water if you are mixing it, and never exceed 40°C.

4 ways to administer it

The simplest way: sprinkle the daily dose onto slightly dampened hay. The powder will naturally adhere, and the animal will ingest it without noticing.

In pellets or mash: integrate the dose directly into the ration. Mix well for even distribution.

For stubborn horses: place the dose on a carrot or a cut apple. The sweet taste masks the spirulina during the first administrations.

When diluting: in a little lukewarm water (never hot — max 40°C), pour over the ration. The fine powder disperses easily.

Treatment protocol — what happens week by week

Weeks 1 and 2

The introductory half-dose. The digestive system adapts. The slight greenish tinge to the droppings at the start of the treatment is normal and harmless. The first signs arrive gradually – the horse appears slightly more toned.

Weeks 3 and 4

The full dose has been reached. Recovery is starting to improve between sessions. The first effects on the coat are becoming noticeable.

Weeks 5 and 6

The effects on the coat and hooves are becoming apparent. The general condition has set in. For sport horses, muscle condition during exertion is more stable.

Six weeks is the minimum for the effects to be truly embedded – not just glimpsed. The 1kg bag at 10g/day covers exactly this cycle with a generous margin.

Precautions for use

– If veterinary treatment is ongoing, particularly anticoagulants, consult your vet before starting.
– Not recommended for horses suffering from hemochromatosis
– For PSSM horses: consult your veterinarian
– Always introduce gradually — half dose the first week
– Keep the sachet tightly closed, in a cool, dry, dark place. Consume within 6 months of opening.

Ingredients: Spirulina (Arthrospira platensis) 100%

✅ Dried below 42°C — phycocyanin, essential fatty acids and vitamins preserved

✅ Produced in France — same process as the Akal human range

✅ No additives · No preservatives · No GMOs · No pesticides

✅ Same quality standards as the human range — no compromise

Is Akal spirulina for horses the same as that for humans?

Yes - same spirulina, same drying process below 42°C, same standards. The difference lies solely in the packaging (1kg sachet) and the dosage, adapted to the weight and needs of equines.

At what age can you give spirulina to a horse?

From 6 months for foals, at a reduced dose of 3g per day. For adults, the standard dosage is 5 to 10g per day depending on the objective and the size of the animal.

Will my horse accept spirulina in his forage?

Most horses accept it without difficulty, especially when mixed with dampened hay. For the more fussy ones, start with a pinch in a carrot or apple and gradually increase over a week.

Is a greenish tint to droppings normal?

Yes, absolutely. That's a sign that the spirulina is being well assimilated and is passing through your system. It usually disappears after a few weeks as your body adjusts.

How long does it take for the effects on the coat to be visible?

The first effects on the coat are usually visible after 4 to 6 weeks of regular treatment at the full dose. For muscle recovery, changes can be noticed as early as the third week.

Can this spirulina be given to a pony or a donkey?

Yes, with doses adapted to their weight — 3 to 5g per day. The 1kg sachet therefore represents a very economical course, up to 10 months for a medium-sized pony.

Is spirulina suitable for pregnant or lactating mares?

Spirulina is naturally rich in nutrients beneficial during gestation and lactation. Consult your vet for a protocol tailored to your mare's situation.
