An Ayurvedic drink made with raw cacao, formulated in Normandy
What is Chai Cacao? Why is it a unique potion?
Chai Cacao is not hot chocolate. It’s also not an energy drink.
It's something else – a hot drink that invites you to slow down. To be present.
At Akal, the team practices and teaches yoga. This chai has been formulated to accompany these moments: before a session, as a morning ritual, or in the evening to close the day. It is a potion of presence and joy – not performance.
And it’s also, quite simply, a pleasure. A creamy texture, a spreading warmth, something nourishing and comforting that the body recognises and appreciates. Some of our clients say it’s become their favourite moment of the day.
Its heart: raw Criollo cocoa from Peru, the original variety of the cocoa tree — heart medicine of the Aztec and Mayan civilisations for millennia.
Around it: adaptogenic maca, spirulina as an active binder, date for sweetness, and spices selected according to Ayurvedic principles.
That's the difference between an industrially produced hot chocolate... and this one – formulated with intention, from our Norman farm.
What the Chai Cacao does — and what it doesn't
What he does
– Accompanied by a moment of calm and return to oneself
– Warming up from the inside — body and soul
– Bring a gentle and grounded vitality, without a nervous peak
What he doesn't do
– Replace a full meal
– Catching up on chronic sleep deprivation
– Exciter - it's not a stimulant
The 5 active ingredients — and for whom
- Peruvian Criollo Cocoa (50% %) — the elixir of the heart
Most commercially available cocoas come from hybridised varieties, dried at high temperatures. They have taste – but they've lost much of what made them precious.
The cocoa used in Tchaï Akal is Peruvian Criollo — the original, non-hybridised variety native to the Amazon basin. It accounts for just 10% of global production. Cold-pressed, it retains all its flavours and nutrients: magnesium, calcium, phosphorus, and a rare molecule — PEA — naturally released during states of joy and well-being. The nutritional profile of a complete breakfast in a glass. Its notes: rich chocolate, with hints of banana and citrus.
Ideal profile: anyone seeking an alternative to coffee that nourishes rather than excites.
- Maca (11 %) — putting down roots
Maca is a root from the Andes – known as an adaptogen, meaning it helps the body adapt to stress rather than being overwhelmed by it. It supports your baseline energy and promotes that inner stability you sometimes seek from coffee, without the drawbacks. It naturally pairs with cacao to create a warm vitality – without the jitters.
Ideal profile: People suffering from overwork, those subjected to chronic stress, and anyone seeking more stable energy throughout the day.
- Spirulina (10 %) — the active binder
This is where the uniqueness of Chai Akal lies. Spirulina is not there for its taste – masked by the cocoa. It is there for what it brings silently: complete proteins, assimilable iron, phycocyanin preserved thanks to our gentle drying below 42°C. It is the common thread between cocoa, maca and spices – and according to Ayurvedic tradition, its spiral shape connects and amplifies the effects of each ingredient it accompanies.
Ideal profile: Vegetarians, people looking to increase their intake of iron and complete protein without having to think about it.
- Because - natural sweetness
The date brings its natural sweetness without refined sugar – its fructose is slowly assimilated by the body, without a blood sugar spike. It softens the texture, nourishes, and balances the power of the spices.
Ideal profile: all profiles — this is the ingredient that makes the drink indulgent without compromising its effects.
- Ayurvedic spices (8 %) — the fire of joy
Ginger, nutmeg, cinnamon, tulsi, cardamom, chilli. Each chosen according to Ayurvedic principles – to warm, ground, and open. Together they help support digestion, calm the nervous system, and create that gentle inner fire that amplifies the effects of each ingredient. This is what makes Chai feel like it’s resonating throughout the entire body, not just the throat.
Ideal profile: Yoga and meditation practitioners, people seeking a transition ritual between different times of the day.
How to prepare Cacao Chai?
The basic dosage: 1 to 3 teaspoons in 200 to 250ml of hot drink. Mix, let it stand for 2 minutes. Sip slowly — that’s part of the ritual too.
The ideal time: in the morning as a gentle alternative to coffee, in the evening to wind down the day, before yoga or meditation.
A crucial precaution: do not heat above 60°C. Excessive heat degrades spirulina's active ingredients. Warm milk, not boiling – that’s all that’s needed.
Which milk to choose?
Almond milk → plant-based smoothness, nutty notes
Coconut milk → creamy and exotic, a natural pairing with Criollo cocoa
Oat milk → round texture, slightly sweet
Hot water + honey → light version, spices forward
Cold milk + ice cubes → summer version
Ritual Protocol — Week by Week
Days 1 to 7
The taste settles in, the ritual is created. The creaminess, the warmth of the spices, that robust cocoa base – the body craves more.
Days 8 to 14
Regularity is producing its first effects – a gentler transition between the times of day, a more natural relaxation in the evening.
Days 15 to 21
The ritual is ingrained. The body and mind recognise the signal.
Three weeks is the duration our customers indicate for fully experiencing the effects of chai as a daily ritual. The 250g pouch covers this cycle exactly – with some left over.

Can it be drunk in the evening without the risk of disturbing sleep?
Yes. Cocoa contains theobromine - a compound far less stimulating than caffeine, which does not interfere with sleep at usual dosages. Ayurvedic spices (tulsi, nutmeg) promote relaxation instead. This is one of the few cocoa drinks suitable for the evening.
Is the taste of spirulina noticeable?
No. The Criollo cocoa, maca and spices completely mask the taste of spirulina. What you can taste is rich chocolate, a warm spicy undertone and a slight creaminess from the maca. The spirulina works its magic without being noticeable.
Can it be given to children?
Yes, absolutely. Our 24-month-old daughter drinks it – that gives you an idea. For children, simply adjust the dosage: half a teaspoon in a small cup of warm milk. Rich in magnesium and iron, it’s a nutritious and tasty alternative to industrial breakfast chocolate.
What's the difference with a shop-bought hot chocolate?
Commercial hot chocolate usually contains sugar as its main ingredient, along with low-quality cocoa, flavourings and emulsifiers. Akal Cacao Chai contains 50% cold-pressed Criollo cocoa, with no refined sugar, and is enriched with maca, spirulina and active spices. It is in a completely different league.
Can it be combined with other Akal products?
Yes. Add 10ml of phycocyanin to your warm milk before preparing the Chai. You get a complete antioxidant and remineralising drink — and a colour in the glass you won't forget.
What is the origin of the ingredients?
Criollo cocoa comes from Peru. Maca from the Andes. Spirulina is cultivated in our 1000m² Norman pools in Saint-Pierre-Azif, in Pays d’Auge, and dried below 42°C. All ingredients are certified Organic Ecocert.
Am I pregnant or breastfeeding, can I consume Chai Cacao?
Yes. Tchaï contains 10% of spirulina — which is rich in iron and complete proteins. As with any dietary change during pregnancy or whilst breastfeeding, we recommend that you discuss this with your midwife or doctor before consuming this product.
