Birch Sap and Phycocyanin: the synergy of spring
Why March is the most precious month for your health
There are windows in the year that nature opens and closes without warning.
Mars is one. Perhaps the most precious.
This is the time when birch trees, after a whole winter of storing their reserves in their roots, begin to draw their sap up to their branches. This ascent only lasts three to four weeks. No more than that. Once the leaves have emerged, the sap becomes bitter, the taps close, and you'll have to wait another year.
This is also the moment when your body, after months of winter – heavier food, less light, less movement – needs a deep purification. Not a diet. Not a violent fast. A gentle, natural, intelligent drainage.
Nature has provided for everything. You still need to know how to listen to it.
Fresh Birch Sap: What It Really Is
Birch sap is not a fruit juice. It is not a herbal tea. It is a living liquid, slightly sweet, almost transparent, collected directly from the trunk of the birch tree at the precise moment the tree emerges from its winter dormancy.
It naturally contains:
- As Simple sugars easily assimilated (xylitol, fructose)
- As Minerals Potassium, calcium, magnesium, manganese, zinc
- As Vitamins of group B and vitamin C
- As Enzymes and amino acids assets
- As saponins, with recognised draining properties
Its main action: to drain the liver and kidneys gently, promote the elimination of waste accumulated during winter, and remineralise the body after months of deficiency in light and fresh vegetables.
European traditional medicines – Slavic, Scandinavian, Germanic – have used it for centuries as a spring tonic. This is not a trend. It is ancestral knowledge that modern phytotherapy is rediscovering.
Fresh sap vs lacto-fermented sap: what's the difference?
This is a question we receive often, and it deserves a clear answer.
The fresh sap It is harvested in March, quickly packaged and delivered chilled. It is alive, enzymatically active, with a slightly sweet and woody taste. It is the most potent — and the most ephemeral — form. Available 3 to 4 weeks per year only, it must be consumed within a few days of receipt.
Lactofermented sap It is available all year round. The lacto-fermentation process allows it to be preserved for several months while developing new properties: a microbial flora beneficial for the gut, a natural acidity that aids digestion, and bioactive compounds from fermentation. Its taste is slightly acidic, more complex than the fresh version.
The two are complementary. If you are reading this article in March: Fresh sap is your top priority. For the rest of the year, the lacto-fermented version takes over.
Phycocyanin: The Blue Gold Hidden Within Spirulina
If spirulina is the Green Gold, then phycocyanin is its Blue Gold.
It is the pigment that gives spirulina its characteristic blue-green colour. But beyond the colour, it is also its component the most precious and the most fragile.
Phycocyanin — and more precisely C-Phycocyanin — is recognised for its properties:
- Antioxidants it neutralises free radicals with an efficacy superior to most known antioxidants
- Anti-inflammatories it helps to modulate chronic inflammatory responses
- Immunostimulants it supports white blood cell production and strengthens natural defences
- Regenerative Preliminary studies suggest it helps stimulate stem cells
- Oxygenating it improves the transport of oxygen in the blood, which supports muscle recovery and vitality
Our French Organic Phycocyanin is extracted from our fresh organic spirulina and offered in Non-dehydrated liquid form. This choice is deliberate: the liquid form guarantees maximum bioavailability and virtually immediate effects, without the losses associated with further dehydration.
Each vial contains 60mg of total phycocyanin, of which 50mg of active C-phycocyanin — the most biologically active form.
The secret synergy: why combine birch sap and Phycocyanin?
This is where it all gets interesting.
Separately, birch sap and phycocyanin are already two powerful allies for spring. Combined, they create something greater than the sum of their parts.
Here's why this synergy is particularly clever:
Sap opens doors. Phycocyanin enters.
Birch sap prepares the ground: it drains the liver, clears the emunctories, and thins cellular exchanges. It creates the ideal conditions for what follows to be better assimilated.
The phycocyanin, in liquid form and at ambient temperature, then benefits from this «open and available» organism to act with tenfold effectiveness. Its antioxidant action precisely targets the waste that the sap has just mobilised. Its immune-stimulating action prepares the body to face the rest of the year.
This is a complete spring detox in two ingredients.
The morning ritual — Sat Pavan's advice
«Take the sap out of the fridge the night before. In the morning, at room temperature, pour 10ml of Phycocyanine directly into your glass of sap. Mix gently. Never heat either of them. Assimilation is instantaneous, with no thermal shock to your body. This is the morning ritual I have practised every March for years.»
— Sat Pavan · Laurent, founder of Akal Spirulina
Why at room temperature?
Phycocyanin, like all living molecules, is sensitive to temperature fluctuations. A thermal shock between a liquid taken from the cold and an organism at 37°C slows down assimilation. Taking the sap out the day before eliminates this shock and optimises bioavailability from the first sip.
How to integrate this ritual into practice
Recommended duration: 3 to 4 weeks - which is exactly how long the fresh sap is available for.
The protocol:
Every morning on an empty stomach, upon waking:
- Pour a large glass of fresh birch sap (150 to 200ml), taken from the fridge the evening before.
- Add 10ml of Akal Phycocyanine directly into the glass
- Stir gently — no shaking, no heat
- Drink slowly, mindfully, before any other food or drink
Wait 20 to 30 minutes before breakfast to allow for assimilation without interference.
What you might feel:
For the first 48 to 72 hours, some people experience mild fatigue or headaches – a sign that the drainage is underway. This is normal and temporary. Drink more water.
From the first week: digestive lightness, renewed vitality, improved sleep for some, clearer skin for others. The effects vary depending on the individual's constitution.
Important note: Never heat Phycocyanin or fresh sap – heat destroys the living active principles of both.

Frequently asked questions
Can this treatment be done without having any particular health problems? Yes. It is primarily a preventative and maintenance treatment. It is suitable for the majority of healthy adults. In case of medical treatment, seek your doctor's advice.
Is birch sap suitable for children? Yes, in an appropriate quantity. Fresh sap is naturally sweet and well-tolerated.
Can other Akal potions be associated with this ritual? Absolutely. the Detox Potion pairs particularly well with this spring protocol — the spirulina + chlorella + dandelion synergy strengthens the draining action of the sap.
What happens if I don't order in time? Lactofermented sap takes over all year round. It doesn't exactly replace fresh sap, but it offers its own benefits – particularly for the intestinal flora. It also pairs very well with Phycocyanin.
In summary: why act now
Fresh birch sap is one of the few absolute natural events in the wellness calendar. Not a marketing emergency – a botanical one. In a few weeks, the birch trees will have resumed their cycle, and you'll have to wait another year.
Phycocyanin, on the other hand, is available all year round. However, its combination with fresh sap in March creates a synergy that you can only replicate once a year.
It is now. It is here. It is Akal.
